The C.O.R.E. Incubator — Career Readiness Through Real Client Work

A 16-week real-client career experience for grades 11–12. Twenty-four students take on one real, bounded challenge from a real company, then defend their recommendations directly to that company. Delivered in your building by a trained moderator.

01 / The model

Career exposure is not career readiness

Students meet professionals, hear speakers and complete simulated projects. Useful — but none of it answers the question that decides a first job: can this person walk into a real professional situation, understand what matters, contribute useful work, and be trusted to follow through?

C.O.R.E. is built around that question. A real company brings a real problem it actually cares about. The Avant Order Foundation shapes it into six connected workstreams so twenty-four students each hold defined responsibility. Students research, build, test, revise and integrate — then present evidence and recommendations to the company in a two-hour Final Client Defense and answer its questions.

The difference The teacher is not the final audience. The client is. Students are not graded on sounding confident — they are judged on evidence, usefulness, follow-through, and whether their work is usable by someone else.
02 / The work

What sixteen weeks looks like

Client KickoffBefore week 1
Students hear the challenge directly from the company and clarify stakes, users and constraints.
Enter the workWeeks 1–2
Read the brief, separate fact from assumption, form six teams of four, define workstreams and professional standards.
DiagnoseWeeks 3–5
Research stakeholders and users, gather evidence, frame the real problem, decide what must be learned before building.
BuildWeeks 6–8
Generate options, compare tradeoffs, produce initial work products, define what would make them stronger.
Test & adaptWeeks 9–11
Test assumptions, interpret results, correct weak reasoning, revise when the evidence changes the responsible route.
IntegrateWeeks 12–14
Combine six workstreams into one coherent recommendation. Resolve conflicts, dependencies and feasibility.
PrepareWeeks 15–16
Build the executive story, tighten evidence, rehearse questioning so every student can explain their own contribution.
Client DefenseTwo hours
Six teams defend evidence and recommendations to the company, which questions the work and responds.
03 / The client

One company. One bounded challenge.

A challenge has to be real enough to matter and bounded enough to teach. C.O.R.E. does not accept generic "make us a marketing campaign" assignments. The company must genuinely care about the problem, students must be able to make real progress in sixteen weeks, and the work must be doable without any confidential information.

Confirmed first

No cohort launches early

The student cohort does not begin until the company partner and the challenge are confirmed in writing.

Named to you

You know who it is

The client is named to the school before any agreement is signed. Challenges are matched on student interest, scheduling and relevance.

Low burden

Three touchpoints

A challenge design session, a 60-minute kickoff, and the two-hour defense. Companies are never asked to teach, mentor weekly, or promise internships.

04 / The split

Who carries what

The Avant Order Foundation provides

  • A trained, paid moderator for all 16 sessions
  • Curriculum, rubrics and challenge architecture
  • The company partner and the challenge
  • Six-workstream design and team roles
  • Client Kickoff and Final Client Defense coordination
  • Student portfolios and the School Outcomes Report

The school provides

  • 24 eligible students in grades 11–12
  • A consistent weekly 90-minute block for 16 weeks
  • A room with student devices and internet
  • One liaison for scheduling and communication
  • Normal approvals and participation consent
No staffing cost School staff are not required in the room. The Avant moderator runs every session. The liaison role is scheduling and communication only — no instructional or supervisory time is asked of your team.
05 / Fit

How it fits your building

Sixteen consecutive weekly blocks is the hardest thing this program asks of a school, so it gets settled first. Two configurations work.

Option A

During-day elective

A scheduled period, one block per week for sixteen weeks. Cleanest attendance and highest completion. Requires a schedule slot and an elective code.

Option B

Extended day

Immediately after dismissal, one 90-minute block per week. No schedule impact. Often fundable through an after-school prime partner already under contract.

Built around you

Your calendar

The sixteen-week plan is built against your school calendar at configuration, with planned skips for testing windows, breaks and known interruptions.

06 / Outcomes

Students leave with evidence, not a certificate

Client brief

A concise explanation of the organization, challenge, stakeholders, constraints and the student's own workstream.

Evidence record

Research, sources, stakeholder evidence and the reasoning that shaped the recommendation.

Work sample

A finished artifact, prototype, analysis, strategy or process tied to the real challenge.

Client presentation

A professional account of what the team learned, built, changed and recommends.

Employer feedback

Structured feedback from the company on usefulness, thinking, professionalism, execution and communication.

Competency portfolio

A student-facing record of what was demonstrated, plus a 90-day plan for what the student does next.

Reporting Within 30 days of the Final Client Defense the school receives an outcomes report: enrollment, completion, deliverables produced, performance evidence, client participation and recommended next steps — reported in aggregate.
07 / Operations

Safeguarding, vendor status and data

Procurement

Approved NYCPS vendor

Cohorts can be requisitioned through normal school channels, or subcontracted through an after-school prime partner already under contract.

Safeguarding

District screening

Every staff member assigned to a school completes that district's established screening and clearance process before the first session. No adult meets with a student alone.

Privacy

No student data retained

Student work, portfolios and records remain with the school and the student. Reporting is aggregate. No personally identifiable student information leaves the building.

Who runs this

Richard Frierson — Founder

Frierson began producing records in New York City as a teenager, as an early member of The Hitmen, the in-house production team at Bad Boy Records. His credits include work on albums by The Notorious B.I.G., Big Pun, LL Cool J, Fat Joe, Faith Evans and 112, among them two albums that reached number one on the Billboard 200.

He went on to build a music licensing catalog of more than 5,000 songs, placed with film studios, television networks and brands including Gatorade, Pepsi and AT&T. In 2025 he launched Unstuck Global, a performance advisory firm working with executives and entrepreneurs on leadership and organizational performance. His production career is documented on Wikipedia.

Why C.O.R.E. exists

A career built on being handed real work as a teenager in New York City — and a program built to hand the same thing to students who have not been offered it.

Governance. The Avant Order Foundation is directed by a board of three. Chair Donnel R. Smith is a practicing middle school computer science teacher, technology coordinator and assistant curriculum writer, and reviews C.O.R.E.'s curriculum and session design for feasibility inside a real school building.
